01By nation
What each nation pays towards a heat pump
Grants differ by nation. Each read on its official page on 01/11/2026.
- Boiler Upgrade Scheme Live
- England and Wales. £7,500 off an air source or ground source heat pump. £9,000 where a home off the gas grid replaces oil or LPG heating, for applications from 21/07/2026 to 31/03/2027; an off-grid home replacing coal or direct electric heating gets £7,500. The installer applies and takes it off the price. The page says: “Until March 2027, you can get an additional £1,500 towards an air source heat pump”. gov.uk, updated 30/10/2026, read 01/11/2026.
- Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan Live
- Scotland. Up to £7,500 grant towards a heat pump, an optional interest-free loan of up to £7,500 more, and £1,500 more for rural and island homes. For owners of an existing home that is their main residence. Get a written offer from Home Energy Scotland before work starts; a heat pump that replaces a heat pump gets a loan only. The page says: “For heating systems such as heat pumps and heat network connections, grant funding of up to £7,500 is available”. homeenergyscotland.org, read 01/11/2026.
- Nest and Green Homes Wales Live
- Wales, on top of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Nest, the Welsh Government scheme, can fit a heat pump free for low-income owners and private tenants in homes rated EPC E or below. Green Homes Wales, from the Development Bank of Wales, lends £1,000 to £25,000 interest free and can top up the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The page says: “You must own or privately rent your home (not local authority or housing association)”. gov.wales, read 01/11/2026.
- Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme Live
- Northern Ireland. No grant for every homeowner: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme does not cover Northern Ireland. NISEP runs fully funded heat pump schemes for low-income owner-occupiers (income under £28,000 single, £35,000 for a couple or family), until 31/03/2027 or until funds run out. The page says: “The NISEP year runs from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, or until funds are exhausted”. uregni.gov.uk, updated 08/04/2026, read 01/11/2026.

The £9,000 is for a home with no mains gas connection that replaces oil or LPG heating with an air source or ground source heat pump. Grant notice on gov.uk, read 01/11/2026.
03Who qualifies
Boiler Upgrade Scheme: who qualifies and how to claim
From the gov.uk guide and Ofgem's guidance for property owners (version 5.1, 02/07/2026).
- You own the property
- England and Wales. Owner-occupiers, landlords, second homes and business buildings all count. You must own the heat pump: a deal where a third party keeps ownership does not qualify. The page says: “including if it's a business, a second home, or a property you rent out to tenants”. gov.uk, updated 30/10/2026, read 01/11/2026.
- It replaces fossil fuel heating
- England and Wales. Gas, oil, LPG or electric heating, fully replaced: you cannot keep a boiler alongside, fit a hybrid, or replace an existing heat pump. The page says: “Fossil fuel heating systems include oil, gas, electric or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas)”. gov.uk, updated 30/10/2026, read 01/11/2026.
- Off the gas grid, for the £9,000
- England and Wales. Ofgem counts a home as off the gas grid only if it has no gas meter point on record (a capped or clamped supply still counts as gas), is not on a heat network and is not a new build. The page says: “capped or clamped supply meter points are still considered as fuelled by mains gas”. ofgem.gov.uk, updated 02/07/2026, read 01/11/2026.
- No EPC needed
- England and Wales. Since 28/04/2026 a valid EPC is no longer required; insulation is advised, not a condition. Earlier insulation funding does not block the grant. The page says: “You're still eligible if you've already had funding to make your property more energy efficient”. gov.uk, updated 30/10/2026, read 01/11/2026.
- Not eligible
- England and Wales. Social housing (shared ownership included), new builds still being built, a property already funded for a heat pump or biomass boiler, and systems over 45 kWth. One grant per property. The page says: “You can get one grant per property”. gov.uk, updated 30/10/2026, read 01/11/2026.
- The installer applies
- England and Wales. Get quotes from MCS certified installers; the one you pick applies to Ofgem for you and the grant comes off your quote. A voucher lasts 3 months (6 months for ground source). The page says: “The installer will apply on your behalf on the Ofgem website”. gov.uk, updated 30/10/2026, read 01/11/2026.

07Questions
Heat pump grant: questions
- How much is the heat pump grant?
- England and Wales: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme takes £7,500 off an air source or ground source heat pump, or £9,000 where a home off the gas grid replaces oil or LPG (applications to 31/03/2027). Scotland: up to £7,500 grant plus an optional £7,500 interest-free loan. Northern Ireland: no grant for every home, only low-income schemes. Checked 01/11/2026.
- Who gets the £9,000 heat pump grant?
- A home in England or Wales with no mains gas connection (a capped or clamped gas supply still counts as gas) that replaces oil or LPG heating with an air source or ground source heat pump, for applications from 21/07/2026 to 31/03/2027. Other homes off the gas grid, for example replacing coal or direct electric heating, get £7,500.
- Do I need an EPC for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
- No. Since 28/04/2026 a valid EPC is no longer required, and insulation is advised rather than required (Ofgem guidance version 5.1).
- How do I apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
- You do not apply yourself. Get quotes from MCS certified installers; the one you choose applies to Ofgem and takes the grant off your quote. A voucher lasts 3 months, or 6 months for a ground source heat pump.
- Is there a heat pump grant in Scotland or Northern Ireland?
- Scotland: Home Energy Scotland offers up to £7,500 grant plus an optional £7,500 interest-free loan, £1,500 more for rural and island homes. Northern Ireland: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme does not apply; NISEP runs fully funded heat pump schemes for low-income owner-occupiers while funds last.
- When does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme end?
- The regulations let Ofgem issue vouchers until 31/12/2029. The extra £1,500 for oil and LPG homes is set to 31/03/2027, and the plan keeps the grant level under review.
